Every night, the Northern Irish town of Omagh witnesses a very strange phenomenon. Since September 2023, a mysterious noise has been popping up around 10 or 11 p.m., inconveniencing some of the city’s population. Nicknamed the “hum” by locals, it’s a kind of light noise, associated with a diffuse hum. However, despite numerous investigations, it would be impossible to find the origin… A mystery that stirs up passions!

The “Hum”, a sound that remains unexplained

A phenomenon already recorded in other cities around the world

Admittedly, the sound is not the most captivating. It’s a sort of low-intensity purring sound, which can be associated with a slight tremor, an engine noise or a drone. A strange, long-range sound, heard throughout the city, which nevertheless makes some residents uncomfortable.

This low-intensity, continuous-frequency noise can be unpleasant for some people, preventing them from sleeping or enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep. Researchers estimate that between 2% and 4% of the population is particularly affected by this nuisance. Tinnitus sufferers in Northern Ireland are more likely to be exposed to this sound, making their daily lives particularly exhausting.

Following a number of complaints, Omagh City Council sent a commission of inquiry to the Fermanagh and Omagh District Environmental Health Department. But after several weeks of observations, recordings and various measurements, the origin of the noise remains undetermined.

Scientists are convinced that this “Hum” is an external phenomenon, linked to a specific geographical area. However, the sound is said to be “elusive”: as soon as scientists get closer to its source, it seems to move, making it impossible to pinpoint its exact location.

Particularly mysterious, this phenomenon is not unique to Omagh; similar incidents have already been observed and heard around the world, including in Australia and North America, creating the same incomprehension among researchers.

So Omagh is far from alone in this problem.

However, the question of how long this sound will persist is a problem: some Northern Irish people have even said they are ready to move out of the city if the Hum persists for several months.

Omagh has been exposed to this sound for over 90 days. It’s enough to test the nerves of some Northern Irish people… and to fuel the most far-fetched theories about this strange noise!

Some would even call this “Hum” a “supernatural” sound, coming from possible invisible UFOs approaching around the city. A whole program that unleashes passions and more or less rational explanations!

Whatever the case, the mystery remains!
