A major blow for Irish pubs in Ireland. The Diageo Group, owner of Guinness beer, has announced a price increase to help cope with inflation and rising energy costs. As a result, every Irishman will now have to pay up to 12 cents more for a pint. A significant increase, which worries many pub owners.
Not surprisingly, with the global economy far from buoyant, the Diageo Group has also been forced to revise its prices upwards. This will have an immediate impact on the price of a pint of Guinness in Ireland, which will rise by around ten cents.
An increase which, according to Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, risks causing a real “financial hardship” for many pub owners, already particularly hard hit by the energy crisis.
The big establishments should be spared, while Irish pubs in small villages could well see their rooms deserted by customers.
The national body representing pub owners has already taken up the cause, urging the Diageo group to back down:
It comes at the worst possible time. Pub owners will have no choice but to pass on this price increase to customers, and they’re very unhappy about it. said the head of Ireland’s winegrowers’ association
These demands went unheeded, with Diageo citing difficult economic conditions worldwide.
It remains to be seen whether the majority of Irish pubs will manage to stick to this policy… some establishments have been charging very different prices for a pint of Guinness for years, and Guinness is generally much more expensive in Dublin than elsewhere…
