This is the incredible story of the day. Pawel Lawreniuk, a 75-year-old Polish man visiting his family in the UK, landed on the island of Malta on his return flight, even though he thought he was arriving in Poland! An unusual mistake, which landed him more than 1,000 kilometers from home in Gdansk!
The man is said to have landed on the Mediterranean island by mistake, only realizing belatedly that he was not in Poland when he tried to hail a cab.
An internal investigation launched by Swissport (of UK airport Leeds-Bradford) and Ryanair is currently underway to shed light on the circumstances that enabled the passenger to access a flight that was not his.
The passenger had passed all airport security checks before boarding, and had a valid passport that had been verified. We are currently seeking explanations as to how this happened… We would like to apologize to Mr. Lawreniuk for the inconvenience caused. said a Swissport spokesperson
Mr. Lawreniuk finally returned home later in the day on one of only two flights from Malta to Gdansk.
Her daughter Lucyna Lawreniuk, 34, said she was still very angry about the incident:
I cried, I was scared – he was in a different country, in a different place. I don’t know how he managed to get to Malta. My father told me he didn’t want to come to my house next year. He doesn’t want to fly anymore.
An incident that has been resolved, and is now just waiting to be explained…
