St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just celebrated in Ireland! The large Irish diaspora in the United States also celebrates the event with numerous events! And among the most famous of them all is New York’s Grand Parade! This age-old celebration dates back to 1762, and every year transforms Manhattan into a place of grandiose festivities, with a focus on Ireland and its traditions. Year after year, the parade sees over 150,000 participants, cheered on by over two million spectators. Between the harmonies of the brass bands, the synchronized steps of the dancers and the parade of participants in traditional costumes, the town takes on a festive Irish air!
If you want to enjoy it, here’s what you need to know about the New York 2024 parade.
The 2024 edition will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2024. The festivities start at 11am and finish around 4:30pm.
The procession will start at 44th Street, march down Fifth Avenue, past St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 50th Street, and continue to 79th Street.
Expect a grand, over-the-top parade, with marching bands, dancers, colorful entertainment and music, all in true Irish tradition. The Irish-American community gathers here to cheer the musicians and salute the culture and history of the Emerald Isle, all in a friendly, family atmosphere.
Fifth Avenue remains the best place to admire the parade. Spectators can be seated along the sidewalks as soon as they arrive. To guarantee an unbeatable view, we recommend coming early.
Finally, for those wishing to access the grandstands, a request by post to the parade organizers is required.
Of course, if you prefer to avoid the crowds, the parade will be broadcast on NBC 4 New York or accessible via livestream. It will be commented in real time, and you’ll be able to enjoy a breathtaking view of the grand parade. Perfect if you don’t like crowds!
