The new episode of the Star Wars saga, “The Force Awakens”, is currently a big hit in cinemas! And Ireland also played its part in this famous space opera, since the scenes at the end of the episode were filmed on the island of Skellig Michael, off the coast of County Kerry in south-west Ireland.
The island, known for its rugged beauty, stone staircases and medieval remains, was an ideal location for filming the final scenes. Skellig Michael has a long history! As early as the 6th century, monks made the island their home, building stone huts as living quarters and carving several hundred steps into the rock to reach the island’s summit.
The scenery is breathtaking, alternating between rocky outcrops and grassy slopes swept by ocean winds. A true haven of peace, conducive to solitude and contemplation! In short: a perfect location for director JJ Abrams, who saw the island as the perfect setting for the Jedi, Luke Skywalker, to retreat from the rest of the world!
We bet the Star Wars phenomenon will boost visits to this island, already a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
