A newly recovered and authenticated violin from the Titanic will be on display at the Titanic Belfast Experience from Wednesday September 18. Found in an English attic in 2006, and authenticated last March after 7 long years of legal proceedings, the violin is believed to have been aboard the Titanic when it sank in 1912.

The instrument is said to have belonged to Wallace Hartley, a famous violinist known to have played continuously during the shipwreck, in the company of other musicians. The violin was given to him by his fiancée, and found after the shipwreck in a leather suitcase strapped around the violinist’s body. The Salvation Army arranged for the violin to be sent to the young man’s fiancée… However, the young woman died shortly before picking it up.

The violin will be on display at the Belfast Titanic, a new museum dedicated to the sinking of the Titanic, until October 13. Estimated at 100,000 euros, it will subsequently be sold at auction in Wiltshire, southwest England, on October 19, 2013.
