Collectors fought for it.
A poster advertising the return journey of the Titanic (a journey that never took place due to its sinking) sold this Saturday to a collector for the modest sum of £62,000.
A very rare poster, which featured photos of the cabins and dining room, as well as a list of fares for 3rd class. The trip was to take place on April 20, 1912, from the United States to Europe, for a fare of $36.25 per person.
This poster is considered a real historical treasure, as the White Star Line (company owning the liner) destroyed as many posters as possible after the sinking to limit bad publicity.
As a reminder, the Titanic was built in Northern Ireland. The object of all the fantasies of the time, its gigantic size drew everyone’s attention. Unfortunately, the ship collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage to the United States, sinking and killing thousands of passengers.
This dramatic story continues to fascinate collectors, who are particularly fond of this type of rare object evoking the Northern Irish liner. In April, for example, a card of the first meal served on the Titanic sold for £100,000.
