The project may seem totally crazy: an identical replica of the Titanic is currently under construction and is due to set sail in 2018. An exorbitant project costing over 500 million dollars, its aim is to pay tribute to the first Titanic, which sank on April 12, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer had this crazy idea. Fascinated by the supposedly unsinkable liner, he now wants to build an identical new Titanic: the Titanic II. The latter would be a carbon copy of the original: same layout, same decor, Turkish baths, Parisian café, and of course, the same grand staircase! Only one thing will be different: the new boat will be built in strict compliance with the latest safety standards. The liner will thus be 4 meters wider, to meet all safety requirements and prevent another tragedy.

Of course, she’ll be equipped with modern evacuation procedures, digital navigation, radar and everything else you’d expect from a 21st century ship. said Blue Star Line, responsible for the Titanic II shipyard.

The new liner will be 269 meters long and 53 meters high, and will be divided into three classes. It will feature 840 cabins, gyms, restaurants, a spa and a swimming pool. All in the same spirit of the time: everything must be scrupulously identical!

Titanic II will set sail in 2018. Its maiden voyage, however, will be very different from that of Titanic I. It will run from Jiangsu, China, to Dubai. Tickets are not yet on sale for this crossing, but many bookmakers believe it will be an expensive one. This could mean as much as $800,000 per person for first-class travel!

A bit expensive, don’t you think?
