The Titanic’s famous violin, on display at the Titanic Belfast Experience, has just been sold at auction, for the incredible sum of 900,000 pounds (or 1.063 million euros!).

Sold at Henry Aldridge & Son auction house in southwest England, this rosewood violin, once owned by musician Wallace Hartley, was originally estimated at £300,000, given its condition (numerous cracks and restoration marks were visible).

Sold for over a million euros, the violin is now the most expensive item ever sold from the Titanic. A record-breaking sale, symbolizing people’s passion for the story of the Titanic and its terrible sinking.

As a reminder, this violin was used by Wallace Hartley, head of the liner’s instrumental band. Its owner played the instrument right up to the last moment of the shipwreck. The violin was a gift from his fiancée. A silver plate attached to the instrument still bears the inscription “For Wallys, on the occasion of our engagement. Maria.”.

It’s a wonderful story, and one that has clearly attracted a buyer!
