First of all, you need to check the documents you need to present in order to enter Ireland! If you’re a citizen of a European Union country, here’s an overview of what you’ll need to present at customs.

E.U. citizens: passport or identity card for travel to Ireland?

Easier travel arrangements for European members of the E.U.

As a member of the European Union (EU), nationals of EU countries benefit from certain facilities when traveling to Ireland. These facilities are the result of the EU’s ongoing commitment to :

  • Free movement of people: One of the main advantages for EU nationals traveling to Ireland is the right to free movement of people. This means they can enter and leave Ireland without needing a visa and without passport controls at the EU’s internal borders.
  • Right of residence: As members of the EU, nationals of EU countries have the right to stay in Ireland for up to three months without needing to apply for a residence permit. However, if they plan to stay longer, they must register with the relevant Irish authorities.
  • The right to work: EU nationals have the right to work in Ireland without needing a work permit. They enjoy the same rights as Irish citizens in terms of employment, working conditions and social security.
  • Access to public services: As members of the EU, EU nationals generally have access to the same public services as Irish citizens, such as education, healthcare and social benefits, subject to certain conditions.
  • Consular protection: EU nationals have the right to request consular assistance from any embassy or consulate of another EU member state in case of need, which can be particularly useful in the event of an emergency or difficulties while in Ireland.

Documents required to travel to the Republic of Ireland

Identity card or passport: the choice is yours!

With so much protection, you don’t need a visa to go to Ireland.

However, you will need to present a national identity card or passport.
These documents must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Ireland. Also, make sure their expiration date is well before your trip.

Don’t hesitate to anticipate the renewal process if you need to: redo your papers before you even plan a trip!

The special case of the French identity card: is the extended validity of the French identity card recognized by Ireland?

In France, the validity of the French identity card has been extended by 5 years… In other words, this means that, in principle, you can present an officially expired identity card, and pass the checks if it complies with French law.

In theory, however.

In Ireland, few airlines or ferry companies recognize this extension.

So, for many, any ID card whose date has officially expired will be systematically refused.

Our advice: don’t take unnecessary risks! Have your national identity card renewed before planning your trip to the Republic of Ireland!

Documents required for travel to Northern Ireland

Go for the passport!

If you wish to move to Northern Ireland, the rules are different. As a reminder, the Republic of Ireland is a member of the European Union, while Northern Ireland is not.

So, when you go to Northern Ireland, you leave the European Union and enter British territory.

For this, the identity card is refused. You’ll need a valid passport! Once again, the passport must be valid.

Proof of return trip

A rare request, but one that can happen!

Although not always required, it is advisable to have proof of your return trip or sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Ireland.

This may include a return ticket, hotel reservation or proof of sufficient funds in your bank account.

Travel insurance

A useful document to present in the event of a problem!

Although not compulsory, it is strongly recommended that you have adequate travel insurance to cover medical and other unforeseen expenses during your stay in Ireland.

Your bank card usually provides a certain level of cover, but don’t hesitate to check out the range of cover on offer… even if it means taking out a separate travel insurance policy!

Practical advice

A few common-sense rules for a worry-free trip

  • Before planning your stay, find out about your papers and how long they will be valid, and anticipate any need to renew them.
