Let me reassure you right away: Northern Ireland is a fairly safe province, where tourism can be enjoyed in complete tranquillity. Nevertheless, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your stay… without any unpleasant surprises.
How safe is it to travel in Northern Ireland?
Current political situation
True, Northern Ireland is still exposed to clashes between unionists and republicans, but the Peace Process, which has been underway for over 10 years, has already succeeded in pacifying most of the tension…
So you’ll have no problem traveling in Northern Ireland, provided, of course, you avoid potential conflicts and adopt certain rules of conduct (which won’t be too restrictive).
That’s why we generally recommend the following rules:
- don’t get involved in polemics linked to the Northern Ireland conflict with local residents. Although discussion can be open, local people are particularly sensitive to the fact that their problem can be solved without the interference of neighboring countries and tourists. What’s more, the conflict tends to be simplified by the foreign media, which could inflame the debate and provoke tensions during any discussions… To be avoided.
- Another tip: don’t venture into sensitive neighborhoods at inappropriate times. Although they’re generally rather quiet, we’d advise you to avoid them during Orange parades (usually in summer), when crowds can sometimes degenerate into violent confrontations. Finally, it’s worth noting that these outbursts usually take place without involving tourists (unless you’ve adopted risky behavior and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time).
In short, don’t worry: the conflict in Northern Ireland is a conflict to be managed between Northern Irishmen. So you can enjoy the wonders of Northern Ireland in complete safety!
