It’s the most eagerly awaited role of the year. Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has been cast by CBS as US President Dondald Trump in a miniseries based on the book by former FBI director James Comey, who was sacked by Donald Trump in 2017.
Entitled “A higher loyalty”, the series will bring together Brendan Gleeson (for Donald Trump) and the no less talented Jeff Daniels, who will play James Comey.
As a reminder, “A higher loyalty”, was a book published in 2017, which revealed the workings of the Trump administration from the inside. James Comey, then director of the FBI, reveals an unstable, egocentric and lying American president, with methods worthy of a “Mafia” boss.
The book caused a scandal and sold several million copies worldwide.
It’s the perfect opportunity for CBS to bring this book back into the spotlight. No release date has yet been announced. Filming is due to start sometime in November 2019, and the series is expected to stretch to a total length of 4 hours.
For Brendan Gleeson, the challenge is considerable: playing Donald Trump’s character, understanding his psychology and intellectual mechanisms without falling into easy caricature will not be without its pitfalls. But CBS seems confident: Brendan Gleeson is unquestionably the best-known Irish actor of his generation. He’s used to playing key roles, having appeared in the Harry Potter saga, Bruges, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, Au coeur de la tempête and Braveheart… The actor also likes to alternate with auteur films, such as Calvary, in which he directly tackles the issue of the Catholic religion in Ireland and its abuses.
A polymorphous actor, the 64-year-old has already won several Golden Globes. It’s a role made just for him, and one that may well earn him his place in the limelight…
It’s hard to imagine a greater acting challenge than playing Donald Trump. You need to have a singular presence and dynamism. You must also have the courage and willingness to play Trump’s psychology from the inside. Oh, and you must be spectacularly talented and watchable. Few players tick all these boxes. Brendan does. I’m ecstatic about it. said a member of the show’s production team.
