In the run-up to St. Patrick’s Day, the American town of Elmira set itself a rather curious challenge: to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest human shamrock! The idea is to gather as many people as possible, dress them in green and have them form a cloverleaf from the sky.
And it’s not their first attempt: last year already, over 1,000 participants tried the experiment. Unfortunately for them, the Guinness Book had rejected their performance, considering that the participants were too far apart for the record to be recorded.
But it takes more than that to discourage the people of Elmira. They’ve decided to cover it all up again this year, for Saint Patrick’s Day 2020! Their ambition is to reform the famous 3-leaf clover on March 15 at 1pm on the Eldridge Park baseball field.
There’s just one hitch: two other communities in the USA will be vying for the same Guinness World Record.
For the town of Elmira, it’s all about paying tribute to their Irish roots, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and bringing the local population together around a festive, unifying project.
Let’s wish them luck, because they’ll probably need more people this year to make a difference! Many estimate that it would take at least 2,000 people to be considered more seriously by the Guinness Book of Records. That’s why the American city is trying to make as much noise as possible to publicize the project and gather more participants. With a bit of luck, their giant clover will be officially named “World’s Largest Human Clover” this year!
