A castle built by the Barrett family

Ballincollig Castle is believed to have been built by the Barrett family a few years after the Anglo-Norman Invasions, around the 13th century.

At the time, it consisted of a large fortified enclosure (still visible today), 2 defensive towers and a 15-meter-high main tower (still standing today), featuring a dark, icy dungeon, as well as several armory rooms and chambers.

Nowadays, the castle is partially in ruins, but still retains a pleasant, authentic charm. The first floor boasts an exceptional, remarkably well-preserved vaulted ceiling, while the main tower rises magnificently to its full height. It’s a shame we can’t visit it in greater detail, as the château is now privately owned…
