Le Ballyloughan Castle - VisionsofthePast - cc

Visiter Ballyloughan Castle.

Ballyloughan Castle is a ruined Irish castle in the Carlow region, not far from Bagenalstown. Built in the 14th century, the château was once fortified by a curtain wall and surrounded by a deep defensive moat… Today, only 3 of the castle’s towers remain, but a visit to these ruins will plunge you into the heart of a most picturesque medieval environment!

History of Ballyloughan Castle

A castle built around 1300…

Ballyloughan Castle dates from around 1300 and is located not far from the town. The castle originally belonged to the Kavanagh family until the 16th century. This very powerful family ruled the area around County Carlow, as well as its peasants. In the past, the château consisted of a half-open, fortified courtyard surrounded by a deep defensive moat.

It wasn’t until the end of the 16th century that Ballyloughan Castle changed hands, becoming the property of the Bagenal family, an Irish family whose power superseded that of the Kavanagh family.

Over the centuries, the castle has suffered a number of battles and confrontations that have seriously damaged the building. In the 19th century, the château was abandoned, then bought by the Bruens family… Nevertheless, it has been reduced to a state of ruin for several centuries now…

Visit Ballyloughan Castle

A ruined site, with 3 towers still standing…

Ballyloughan Castle is free to visit. Situated in a field, all that remains of the château is a ruined square tower, flanked by 2 large round towers. To be on the safe side, we advise against entering the ruins, which are sometimes unstable and unsteady.

In any case, don’t hesitate to wander the grounds: here and there, you’ll find further traces of the castle’s foundations and crumbling walls…
