Ballymoon Castle is an Irish rune castle located 3 km east of Muine Bheag in County Carlow. Magnificent and imposing, it was built in the 13th century for Roger Bigot, a wealthy bourgeois of the time.
Ballymoon Castle once consisted of a square courtyard, protected by impressive walls several meters thick and some ten meters high.
A system of portcullises still remains, once used to protect access to the building.
Today, only the courtyard and these walls are identifiable: the château itself has been razed to the ground, and only its foundations remain.
It offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area, and possesses the authentic charm of Irish ruins. Access is free, and the tour is a lot of fun!
