History of Belleek Castle

Origins and construction

Built in the early 1830s, the château was erected on the ruins of a former abbey, adding historical depth to its already picturesque location.

Belleek Castle was built by Marshal Sir Arthur Edward Knox, associated with the Knox family of the Mayo region. The design reflected the neo-Gothic style popular at the time, with medieval influences giving the château its romantic allure and charm. The imposing architecture, turrets and vast surrounding estates were designed to impress, while offering a glimpse into the grandeur of 19th-century Irish aristocracy.

Changes in ownership and decline

Over the years, the château has changed hands several times, each owner adding his or her own touch to the building’s history and structure. However, like many grand mansions of the period, Belleek Castle went through a period of decline, particularly in the mid-20th century, when maintaining such a property became increasingly difficult.

Restoration and rebirth

Belleek Castle’s renaissance began in the 1960s, when it was acquired by the late Marshall Doran, a lover of antiques and maritime history. Doran was an adventurer and collector who saw the castle’s potential not only as a home, but also as a place where he could share his vast collection of art, antiques and armor. Under his direction, the château has been carefully restored, with particular attention to preserving its historic character while making it comfortable for modern living.
