If you love manor houses with character and history dating back to the 15th century, then take a look at Borris House in County Carlow, Ireland. This château/manor house is one of the few buildings still owned by the same family: it has been passed down through more than 16 generations!
Borris House is first and foremost a family affair! The castle was built in the 15th century by the McMorrough Kavanagh family, who ruled the Leinster region as high kings. Since then, the manor has been passed down through the same lineage.
Today, the building is inhabited by Sara and Morgan Kavanagh, the 16th generation of the family! The latter live in respect of their heritage, and have preserved period furniture, paintings and everyday objects, not to mention numerous medieval documents recounting their dynasty’s past. In addition, the manor’s many halls and bedrooms have been preserved: you can visit them and discover the sometimes monumental decor (lots of mouldings, marble, vaulted ceilings, carpets, precious woods and imposing furniture!
Similarly, the 263 hectares of parkland and woodland surrounding the manor have retained their original character and appearance.
Visits to the manor house can be booked in advance on their website. Cost €24 per person to explore the manor house, local farm and wooded park. A rather expensive price indeed, but one that allows owners to reinvest their earnings in the renovation and day-to-day upkeep of their manor house!
Your guides will be nothing less than the castle’s owners, and will tell you all about the history of their property, from the first kings of Leinster to the present day. It’s a fascinating, friendly visit that matches the beauty of the place!
For those with a larger budget, there’s the option of sleeping in one of the bedrooms of a Victorian cottage adjoining the manor house. The rooms are beautiful and friendly. Expect to pay €300 per night for 6 people.
Last but not least, the manor also offers to organize your weddings, for a very large cheque, of course… Calling all interested parties!
