The abbey as we know it was built on the site of an ancient monastery founded by Saint Baedán, who died around 809. The present abbey dates back to the 12th century, but suffered a terrible fire in the first decade of the 15th century, leading to partial reconstruction in the years that followed.
One of the most impressive features of the new building is its west pediment, with its many elaborate sculptures. Among them, don’t miss the scenes featuring the Archangel Saint Michael, holding a sword, then a scale for weighing souls. You’ll also find other representations of St. Augustine, St. Catherine and St. John the Baptist.
And don’t miss the window on the east side of the building. Majestic, it is a fine example of the architectural apogee of the period!
The setting of the abbey is superb: a true haven of peace and tranquillity!
