Coolbawn House, located in County Wexford, is a 19th-century relic. Erected in 1840 from the ashes of a house once consumed by fire, this splendid Tudor Revival residence was the brainchild of eminent politician Francis Bruen. He built the edifice for his wife Lady Catherine Anne Nugent, using the best materials of the time.

Its refined ornamentation, carved in stone and granite, testified to its splendor and the wealth of its owner. At the time, the house was considered one of the most beautiful properties in the region!

However, Coolbawn House fell victim to the ravages of fire in 1923, during the Irish Civil War. Since then, she has never regained her original splendor, being but a shadow of her former self.

A house haunted by a maid struck by lightning

Although all that remains today are darkly charming ruins, Coolbawn still has a reputation as a haunted place.

And it’s said to be one of the scariest places in Ireland!

An ancient legend has it that, on a stormy night long ago, a servant girl was contemplating the onslaught of wind and rain, when a bolt of lightning ripped through the sky, striking the window behind which she was standing. Struck by lightning, the young woman lost her life, but her face and entire silhouette were literally etched into the window glass through which she gazed at the sky. The lightning thus traced the contours of her head in the glass, immortalizing the young woman for eternity…

Although the window didn’t survive the Civil War fire, it’s rumored that the spirit of this tormented young soul still wanders around Coolbawn House.

Some even claim to have seen her silhouette by the now glassless window, where death had so abruptly taken her.

Others heard voices, laughter and tears. Some have even felt invisible hands touching them!

In 2015, a team of ghost hunters conducted an investigation at Coolbawn House. They used cameras, audio recorders and motion detectors to try to capture evidence of paranormal phenomena.

The team recorded several strange sounds, including voices, laughter and crying. They also observed blurred shapes in the camera images.

Terrifying, isn’t it?

Explore Coolbawn House

If ghost stories don’t scare you, you can come and explore the grounds. But beware: the house is located on private property. If you wish to visit, you must first ask permission from the current owners, the Tector family.

What’s more, it’s important to know that the house is in a sorry state, and some areas are likely to collapse any day now.

Considered dangerous to explore, the site is barricaded with hay to deter Urbex specialists who might be tempted to go inside.

As safety is paramount, we recommend that you do not venture inside, but rather admire it from the outside.

Be that as it may, the château is an architectural marvel. Its Tudor style is magnificent. Overgrown with vegetation (mostly ivy), the derelict site has a real charm all of its own.

The building contrasts with its finely cut white granite stones, sourced from the nearby mountains. As for its architecture, the building is richly adorned with pinnacles and spires: a purely British style!

Don’t miss out on the home’s surroundings either. Coolbawn House offers breathtaking views of the Blackstairs Mountains. You immediately get the impression of being in a remote place, away from the world.

Add to that his ghost stories, and you’re immediately caught up in a strange atmosphere!
