Dunsandle Castle is a 15th-century Irish castle not far from the town of Athenry in County Galway. Entirely open to visitors, its location in the middle of the forest, and its stones steeped in history, make it an exceptionally charming place to visit…
Dunsandle Castle dates back to 1574 and was built for Villig Osebeg of Dunsandle, a wealthy landowner of the time. After passing into the hands of the Burke family, the castle was renovated and transformed into a museum and family attraction.
You’ll begin your exploration with a complete tour of the chateau, from bedrooms to banqueting halls and kitchens. You’ll also discover its main hall, whose atypical architecture differs strangely from the architectural styles of the time. During the tour, a guide will explain the history of the castle, and take you to the top of the tower to admire the view over the forest. The view is splendid!
Once the tour is over, you’ll have the chance to return to the castle entrance and take part in medieval entertainment: dress up in period garb and shoot with a bow, watch knights fight….etc! Activities that should appeal to the youngest visitors!
And don’t forget to round off your visit with a stroll through the forest around Dunsandle Castle: the vegetation is magnificent and wild. A superb playground for hikers!
