Ferns Castle is a superb 13th-century ruined Irish castle. Although only a few sections of the walls remain, the castle is a marvel, with its 2 towers and fortified enclosure still partially standing. Located in the very heart of downtown Ferns, it’s impossible to miss! And best of all, the tour is free!
Ferns Castle is said to have been built in the 13th century by William Earl, Earl of Marshall, a wealthy local nobleman.
At that time, the building formed a square, with 4 corner watchtowers. The inner courtyard probably housed several small buildings reserved for soldiers.
After being passed from father to son, the castle was finally abandoned around the 16th century, and was only taken over by the Irish state in the 20th century.
Today, only half of Ferns Castle remains: 2 corner towers and a surrounding wall. In the largest of the towers is a small circular chapel, whose walls have been magnificently decorated.
One floor down, there’s a small vaulted cellar, where soldiers on duty were probably resting or storing the castle’s riches.
Don’t be surprised if part of the ruins is protected by a fence: this has been put in place by Irish Heritage to prevent visitors from tampering with the ruins. In any case, a guided tour is available if you wish: your guide will be delighted to show you around and tell you all about the history of this magnificent château.
