Glengowla Mines is an old silver and lead mine, exploited in Galway in the 19th century. Ireland’s one and only mine, it is now inactive. It is, however, open to the public, allowing visitors to discover the bowels of the earth, with its man-made cavities and geological riches. A must-see!
This Connemara mine, abandoned in 1865, is a true testament to 19th-century ore extraction methods. You can get a taste of it by visiting some of the galleries, where miners tried to exploit silver and lead.
Old framework, partial darkness, lit by a few lamps and torches… You’ll have the opportunity to discover the harsh conditions under which miners worked at the time: it’s enough to send shivers down your spine!
A guide is on hand to help you discover the mine and its secrets. A fun and entertaining visit!
