Harry Avery’s Castle is a pretty Northern Irish castle near Newtownstewart, County Tyrone. Built on a hill in the 14th century, it is considered one of the most original castles in the region!
Harry Avery’s Castle is said to have been commissioned in the 14th century by Henry Aimbreidh O’Neil (Harry Avery O’Neill). At the time, this clan chief was one of the most influential in the region.
Originally, the château was rectangular in shape with 2 storeys, topped by 2 twin towers and a central courtyard. The towers are rather original, looking more like a janitor’s house than a nobleman’s, as they are set high up in a D-shape.
Today, only the towers and keep have survived. It must be said that the castle endured several sieges until 1609, when it fell to the English. Specialists suspect, however, that the site once housed kitchens and stables, although they are unable to prove this officially.
The castle tour is free and really fun. The 2 towers are still majestic, and the ancient foundations of Harry Avery’s Castle can still be seen. A must-see if you like charming ruins.
