Kilconnell Abbey is a magnificent Franciscan abbey in the eponymous village of Kilconnell in County Galway. Founded in 1414 by William O’Kelly, Lords of Ui Maine (a small kingdom in Connacht), the abbey has survived to the present day, and stands majestically, despite its ruins, in a green setting!
Today, the abbey is maintained by the OPW, but was long owned by the O’Kelly family, who founded the building. The abbey is the burial place of many members of the family, who were buried in the cemetery adjoining Kilconnell Abbey.
The abbey was an important religious center until 1785, when it was deserted due to a decline in religious vocations. Since then, the site has been accessible free of charge, and can be visited on its own, provided caution is exercised (the ruins are often unstable and dangerous). Here you can admire a square bell tower in excellent condition, partially intact pediments and numerous Celtic crosses scattered throughout the cemetery.
The place is pleasant and full of charm. A must-see!
