Lough Oughter is a series of lakes in the heart of County Cavan. Situated on the course of the River Lough Erne, the complex extends over almost 9 hectares, offering magnificent views of the Irish countryside and its lush shores! An ideal spot for fishing, a walk in the fresh air, or a siesta in the shade of the trees!
Lough Oughter is surrounded by the villages of Belturbet to the north, Cavan to the east, Crossdoney to the south and Killeshandra to the west. It’s especially appreciated for its peace and tranquility, as well as the rich diversity of its flora and fauna. The lake is said to be the winter haunt of whooper swans, as well as the headquarters of great crested grebes, a species of aquatic bird thought to be virtually extinct at the time. The bio-diversity of Lough Oughter is particularly interesting!
The lake is also home to Killykeen Forest Park, a superb forest park where you can stroll along the shoreline. Gigantic trees, signposted paths and mossy rocks: a great place for nature lovers!
Don’t forget your hiking boots and fishing rod in your rucksack! The site is teeming with ideal fishing spots, and you may be lucky enough to bring home a magnificent pike or other lake fish from your excursion!
Among other things, you can admire Cloughoughter Castle, a superb 18-metre-high ruined castle, isolated on a small island no more than 100 metres in diameter! Built by the Anglo-Normans in the 13th century, it was destroyed by British cannon fire in 1653. Unfortunately, it can only be admired from the shore, but it’s well worth the detour!
