Nenagh Castle is an Irish castle in the village of Nenagh, County Tipperary. Built around 1200 by Theobald Walter, the building takes the form of a large crenellated round tower overlooking the rest of the town. The majestic château has been magnificently preserved over the centuries, despite the disappearance of its defensive walls. A great place to visit if you’re in the area.
Passing through Nenagh? You won’t want to miss its castle: omnipresent, it seems to silently watch over the Irish town. Built from limestone blocks, it takes the form of a round tower, whose walls have disappeared (a few vestiges still exist, but are anecdotal).
The tower’s dimensions are impressive: 30 metres high and 15 metres in diameter. It has 4 storeys with 101-step stone staircases.
The tower has been completely renovated to make it the city’s premier tourist attraction. We appreciate its charm, as well as its restoration, which has been carried out with the utmost respect for history. Not to mention the fact that it’s free to visit…
You can also explore the tower’s main rooms, where you’ll discover magnificent rooms and a spiral staircase… The whole is bathed in a fascinating atmosphere, where you can rediscover Irish medieval history, the great episodes of the city of Nenagh, and the art of living of the period, with its decoration and furnishings.
But be warned: the hundred or so steps on the staircase require a bit of breath and stamina. But don’t hesitate to persevere: the reward is at the end of the road, with incredible views over the village and the Irish countryside of Tipperary. Immortalize them with a few photos, and we’re off to new adventures!
