Known as the “Velvet Strand”, Portmarnock beach is a lovely beach in north County Dublin. It’s one of Dubliners’ favourite bathing spots! Located less than 25 minutes from Dublin city center by DART, the beach has it all: a vast expanse of fine sand, a pretty view of the sea… All in all, it’s the perfect way to take a break and go for a swim!

Visit Portmarnock beach

A perfect beach for swimming without leaving Dublin!

Portmarnock beach is located in the coastal village of Portmarnock, north of Dublin, not far from the village of Malahide. The area is quite nice and popular for its beach and seaside restaurants. It’s easy to get to by DART (a kind of clean, comfortable RER), which takes you to the coastal villages north of Dublin.

This is where Dubliners like to spend their weekends when the sun is out. Portmarnock beach is perfect for a swim, a romantic picnic on the sand, or simply a siesta with your feet in the water!

The beach adjoins a top-class golf club: Portmarnock Golf Club. If you want to work on your swing, don’t hesitate to come here: some of the world’s greatest players have already played here: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington have all played on this magnificent course, considered one of the best in the world.

Finally, round off your trip with a delicious pizza overlooking the sea at Lali’s Italian restaurant, or enjoy the morning menu at McHugh’s Wine & Dine. Delicious!
