Proleek dolmen is an archaeological site located less than 10km from Dundalk in County Louth. Imposing and majestic, its unique shape attracts thousands of tourists every year… A pretty cool dolmen, to be seen free of charge, to the delight of megalith enthusiasts!
Located in the grounds of the Ballymascanlon Hotel, the Proleek dolmen dates back to 3,500 BC. At 3 metres high, it is a perfect example of a “high dolmen”. Its covering slab is said to weigh no less than 35 tonnes, making it one of Ireland’s most imposing dolmens!
It’s a great place to visit, and access is free… as long as you ask your hotel for permission beforehand. The area is quiet, so you’ll have plenty of time to admire the tomb! Photos are, of course, highly recommended! But be careful: despite their size, the stones are fragile, and we advise against touching them…
There is, however, a legend surrounding this dolmen. The story goes that a wish would be granted to anyone who managed to throw a small pebble at the top stone without it falling off! This explains the incredible number of pebbles on the main table!
