If you’re passing through the village of Roscrea, we recommend a visit to Roscrea Castle, a hilltop castle right in the heart of the town center. Built in the 13th century, it boasts architecture typical of the region, as well as beautifully wooded gardens.
Before the current château, there was originally a wooden fortification built in 1213. It wasn’t until 1281 that the decision was taken to build a stone castle, resembling an Anglo-Norman fortified tower.
It took several years to build the tower.
Unfortunately, the owners did not live in the fortress for long. The château quickly fell into disuse following the Williamite wars, and suffered extensive damage. It was only finally taken over by the state in the 20th century, and renovated as a tourist attraction… A successful attraction!
Roscrea Castle is a polygonal fortified structure surrounded by curtain walls. The castle itself takes the form of a 2-storey tower, with two towers overlooking the whole of Roscrea.
The tour includes both interior and exterior exploration of the castle. You’ll discover rooms subtly decorated in the medieval tradition, with tapestries and period furniture. Your guide will explain the history of the site, the owners who have lived there, and the various sieges and wars the castle has endured.
Finally, a short tour of the gardens and a small exhibition round off the visit. The walk is actually quite pleasant, taking you right back to the 13th century. Don’t miss the recently renovated mill and its Celtic cross of St. Cronan in the heart of Roscrea Castle’s gardens!
