Slane Castle is a superb Irish castle located in Slane, in the Boyne Valley, County Meath. Built in 1785, it is one of the region’s outstanding monuments. Very popular with the stars, too!
Slane Castle is an 18th-century edifice built for the Marquesses of Conyngham. Set on a natural promontory, the château overlooks the Boyne Valley.
Designed by architects James Gandon, James Wyatt and Francis Johnston, the site alternates between Gothic and Victorian styles.
The castle was once the workplace of Irish band U2. They moved there in 1984 to work on the album “The Unforgettable Fire”. In 2001, they did it again with a concert released on the DVD U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers did the same, as did the Rolling Stones, Oasis, Celtic Woman and Madonna.
Today, the castle is still inhabited by the family’s descendants (by Henry Conyngham). It is therefore impossible to visit it, but you can still admire it from the outside, with its Gothic gate and pretty crenellated turrets!
