Cabra Castle is an impressive Irish castle, now used as a luxury hotel. Located near the village of Cabra, it was built in the 19th century in a clever blend of Gothic and Neo-Norman styles. It’s a lovely castle, and a must-see!
Cabra Castle is located just off the R179: easily recognizable with its neo-Norman exterior, the castle is distinguished by its many crenellated octagonal towers. Inside, the style is in stark contrast, with Gothic decor and architecture. All the furnishings date from the 1810s, when the building was built by the Foster family.
The project to build the château was so colossal that it bankrupted the Foster family. Just as the castle was being completed, the family was forced to sell the property to wealthier neighbors: the Pratts, who lived not far from Cabra Castle. The château was then passed down from generation to generation, until 1964, when it was sold to the Brennan family, who decided to convert it into a hotel. The hotel was finally sold in 1991 to the Corscadden family, who restored it to its former glory.
Since then, the château has remained in operation, welcoming many guests in search of a change of scenery and historical cachet. Even if you’re not a customer, don’t hesitate to stop by, if only to take a look at the exterior!
