If you love peat bogs, then be sure to check out Corlea Bog, a lovely peat bog in County Longford. This huge site is located close to the River Shannon, and is crossed by an ancient prehistoric road!
The Corlea peat bog is a rather atypical peat bog: it extends over several square kilometers, and has become a veritable tourist attraction in its own right!
The peat bog has a small museum dedicated to the site’s archaeological past: the Corlea Trackway Visitor Center. This is where you can learn more about the prehistoric road that crosses the peat bog! Among other things, you’ll learn that this road enabled the population of the time to travel on foot without the risk of sinking into the peat bog. You can also admire an extensive collection of roadside finds. All from the Iron Age!
But that’s not all: the peat bog can be visited freely, using the famous prehistoric route! This is your chance to do a bit of walking, while immersing yourself in the wild silence of the peat bog! You’ll also be able to take a 1.5-hour walk to discover the many facets of the Corlea peat bog!
During your walk, you’ll notice the presence of 4 artificial lakes. These have been specially designed to preserve the peat bog, ensuring a constant level of humidity. It’s a great way to protect this precious organic expanse!
