Ireland’s peat bogs hold many secrets! The proof is in the Corlea Trackway Visitor Center website. This center is entirely dedicated to the Corlea peat bog, where Iron Age man is said to have created a through road. A unique and enriching place!
The Corlea Trackway Visitor Center tells the story of an ancient Iron Age bog road. Belatedly discovered in 1984 near the village of Kenagh, this road enabled the Iron Age population to move about without fear of sinking and dying in the peat bogs.
Archaeological excavations undertaken as early as 1985 revealed the existence of a network of 16 roads, within which countless remains were discovered! Everyday objects, cut stones, pottery, weapons and arrowheads… The discovery is still considered one of the most important in the region! (It has to be said that this road is the largest prehistoric road ever recorded!)
The Corlea Trackway Visitor Center brings together this collection of objects. You’ll discover rare pieces, all backed up by comprehensive explanations.
But the activity doesn’t stop there: after visiting the museum, you’ll be able to take a leisurely stroll along the famous road through the peat bogs. The walk is free and lasts about 1h30.
