Irish bridges
Le Craigmore viaduct - Eskling - cc

If you venture north of Newry, on the railroad side, you’ll easily come across the Craigmore Viaduct, an impressive bridge designed in 1849 by John O’Neill. In fact, it’s said to be the largest Viaduct in Ireland!

Visit Craigmore Viaduct

A 19th-century viaduct in the Newry countryside…

The Viaduct consists of 18 granite arches, culminating at a height of 38 metres, crossing County Down from one end to the other.

To this day, the Viaduct is still used by the major Irish railways on their links with Belfast. So don’t be surprised if you see trains passing over the bridge.

The bridge offers a lovely view of the surrounding Newry countryside. It is of course impossible to reach the summit for safety reasons, but you can admire it from below, with its various arches!
