Cromwell Fort is a former military fortress, built on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Situated by the sea on the island of Inishbofin, the fort is now in ruins, and offers an exceptional sight!
The Irish island of Inishbofin has many traces of military occupation, dating back to Cromwell. The island was occupied by the latter in 1652. He decided to establish a garrison there, and had several forts and barracks built, considering the island an important strategic location.
Built into the cliffs on a rocky promontory, the building is both impressive and magical. Its walls are still standing, in the form of a rectangular structure. The roof has not stood the test of time, but it’s easy to imagine it from today’s ruins.
You’re free to approach the building on foot along the Inishbofin coastline. Its incomparable view of the sea will appeal to lovers of serious maritime landscapes!
