The Dunbrody Famine Ship is a superb life-size replica of the boat used by Irish emigrants to flee their homeland for the United States. Based in New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland, the boat is a kind of floating museum, retracing the period of the Great Famine and the mass exodus of people to the New World…
The Dunbrody Famine Ship is similar to the Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship & Famine Museum, another 19th-century ship replica, based in the heart of Dublin’s docks. Considered one of New Ross’s star attractions, the boat takes you deep into Irish history, evoking the cruel ravages of the Great Famine, widespread poverty and the Irish desire to flee to the United States by embarking on a terrible crossing.
On the program: exhibitions and guided tours of the ship, re-enactments and performances in period costume. It’s a great way to have fun while learning, and to discover the maritime history of Irish emigrants and their courage during the crossing!
Beyond the boat, don’t miss the Irish America Hall of Fame, a memorial to the victims of the Great Famine. The monument is less than 30 metres from the boat.
