If you like imposing, natural, bucolic waterfalls, then you’ve come to the right place! County Leitrim is proud to boast “Fowley Falls”, a magnificent, stair-stepping waterfall. Its origins lie in the Glenanniff, a river that meanders at altitude, eventually carving out a staircase-like valley of blue limestone. This waterfall is grandiose, and well worth the detour!
If you like a nice walk in the middle of nature, then you can walk along Fowley Falls. It offers a breathtaking view of the rocks, and the river that gradually cascades over the different strata of the waterfall.
The location is ideal for a picnic, a siesta, or even a few photos for budding photographers.
Don’t forget to bring walking shoes and a windbreaker: the waterfall is slippery, and beware of wet rocks.
A short 3km gravel path follows the river (note that this circuit does not form a loop, and you’ll have to turn back to get back to your starting point). Don’t miss the opportunity to admire its ecosystem, with its local flora and fauna along the banks. The trees that line it are of the utmost beauty, and will immerse you in an exceptional olfactory and auditory universe (the birds have a field day, and you’ll be able to admire firs, oaks and other imposing species along the way).
As for fish, the area is teeming with beautiful species! (Many locals used to gather below the river, towards the “Mass Rock”, to fish: it seems to have been one of the most prolific spots!)
