The Meehambee Dolmen is an Irish megalithic portal in County Roscommon. Dating back to around 3,500 BC, it will impress you with its size and picturesque setting on the edge of the forest!

A dolmen discovered only in the 1960s!

Located just off the M6, the Meehambee dolmen is one of the county’s finest megaliths. Access is free, so you can admire it without getting too close (barbed wire has been installed to prevent damage to the megaliths).

For the record, Meehambee Dolmen was only discovered in the 1960s. Two children playing there accidentally unearthed 2 prehistoric axes… which led to extensive archaeological excavations. The dolmen was thus discovered, and protected as a national heritage site…

Rather impressive, the dolmen currently stands 2.3 metres high. It takes the form of 6 moss-covered megaliths, bearing a 24-ton angular stone at a 45-degree angle. The stone supporting the back of the upper table collapsed, causing the entire dolmen to slide down.

According to researchers, the Meehambee Dolmen is the burial site of an ancient king or clan chief living during the Neolithic period. Numerous bones and other artifacts from the period were found…
