Irish history buffs, this is the museum for you! The National 1798 Visitor Centre in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, is the place to discover the secrets of the 1798 Rebellion. The program includes battles, tragic events and deadly confrontations…
The museum is located in the heart of Enniscorthy, a pretty Irish village renowned for its peace and quiet, its castle, and its houses with colorful facades.
The museum was built in the heart of the town, due to Enniscorthy’s heavy involvement in the 1798 Rebellions. The town bore the brunt of the decisive battle of the Rebellions, which took place a few miles to the east, on Vinegar Hill, on June 21, 1798.
The museum is an opportunity to recall the events of that year. (As a reminder, the Irish rebellions were a conflict between the nationalist Irish and the British. The primary ideology was to drive out the British, who had come to impose their power in Ireland).
You’ll learn how the rebellions were sparked off, what strategies were put in place, and how the Irish were defeated by the British at Vinegar Hill.
The museum is great for the whole family. Expo, videos, presentation of period objects… You’ll even see costumed extras to spice up your visit!
