Less than 3km east of the Boyle, near the south-eastern shore of Lough-Key, is the Rockingham Remembered Tour, an exciting tourist attraction that takes you on an exploration of the history, flora and fauna of the local forest park, through underground tunnels dating back to the 19th century. The tour takes you into the depths of the earth, and then up to the 5-storey Moylurg Tower, which offers a magnificent view of Lough Key lake.
The Rockingham Tunnels are inseparable from the history of Rockingham House, a magnificent manor house built in 1810 by John Nash for Lord Viscount Lorton. At the time, it was considered the most beautiful house in Ireland… but it all came crashing down the day the mansion was destroyed by a terrible fire in the 1950s…
Today, the underground tunnels adjoining the house have survived… At the time, they were used by servants to circulate. It was here that food, furniture and all the supplies needed to maintain the manor house circulated…
These two 300-metre-long tunnels take the form of underground tunnels, with absolutely magnificent barrel vaults.
You can explore them freely on a self-guided tour. You’ll discover all the juicy anecdotes circulating around the manor and its tunnels…
Finally, you’ll reach the renovated 5-storey Moylurg observation tower. The view from the summit is splendid and well worth the detour!
Last but not least, you can take a ride on a wood-and-steel structure, exploring the forest park and strolling under the canopy of trees. The circuit takes you 9 metres above the ground and offers breathtaking views!
It should be noted that the site is wheelchair-accessible, enabling visitors to enjoy their visit in excellent conditions.
Dogs are not allowed and cannot accompany you on your visit.
