If you’re passing through Nenagh, and you’re a fan of Irish punk, then a quick stop in front of Shane MacGowan’s mural is a must! Inaugurated in October 2024, in tribute to the death of the famous Pogues singer, this mural is a vibrant testimony to Ireland’s attachment to its artist. A painting rich in emotion, reminiscent of the murals in Belfast!
Did you know? Nenagh is the birthplace of Shane MacGowan! Born just a few miles away, in the market town of Carney, the singer has always been the pride of the region!
Following the singer’s tragic death in 2023, Tipperary County Council decided to pay a symbolic last tribute to MacGowan by commissioning a mural to be displayed in the heart of Nenagh! The project was commissioned from artist Neil O’Dwyer. He had the opportunity to use the front of an entire house to showcase his talent!
And the result is more than up to the task! The artist depicted Shane MacGowan at the height of his success: young, hair in disarray, microphone in hand… in black, blue-green and red tones. The style is realistic, punk and Celtic.
Shane MacGowan’s family held lengthy discussions with the artist to arrive at this result.
But the fresco doesn’t stop there! Neil O’Dwyer took the opportunity to fill the painting with references and symbols in tribute to his career.
Fans will appreciate the Celtic shield, representing protection and love. The red rose is a direct reference to the Pogues’ first album, “Red Roses for me”.
Shane MacGowan also wears a green scarf, in reference to the song “Fairytale of New York”, a worldwide hit still widely listened to at Christmas time! The painting, inaugurated on October 06, 2024, is now part of Nenagh’s attractions.
A magical fresco, accessible free of charge to anyone wishing to pay tribute to the great Shane.
Don’t hesitate to drop in: the place itself has become an emblem of the career of the Pogues and their singer!
