Le St John's Lighthouse de Killough - Philip McErlean - cc

St Johns Point is an Irish lighthouse located at Killough in County Down, Northern Ireland. This striking lighthouse, with its bright yellow and black stripes, is now fully automated and offers rooms for rent in the former lighthouse keepers’ apartments. An old-fashioned way of life, at the rhythm of the sea and the ocean!

St John’s Point was designed in 1844 by George Halpin, one of the most famous civil engineers of the time. Initially painted white, it wasn’t until 1954 that the lighthouse was fitted with yellow and black stripes.

At over 40 metres high, it is believed to be Ireland’s tallest land-based lighthouse. (Fastnet Rock is the highest lighthouse built at sea).

For the record, the Titanic’s first tests were conducted in the vicinity of St Johns Point: the lighthouse guided the liner during its first tests!

Now automated, it is one of Ireland’s most important lighthouses, providing efficient guidance for approaching boats.
