An orca was spotted this week in the waters of Dingle Bay (Co. Kerry) in Ireland. A first, which took place in front of the amazed eyes of the passengers of the Dingle Sea Safari, a tourist boat offering an encounter with dolphins and other marine creatures of the Irish region. It was a breathtaking sight and a reminder of just how rich Dingle Bay really is!

A reminder of the Irish people’s close ties with the Ocean World!

Since the famous dolphin Fungie disappeared from the waters of Dingle, tourists had little hope of experiencing such an encounter with an orca! As a reminder, Fungie had accompanied the daily life of the citizens of Dingle for nearly 40 years, with his mischievous appearances! So much so, that companies like Dingle Sea Safari were set up to enable tourists to meet Ireland’s most playful wild dolphin!

With his death in 2020, Fungie had left a real void in the hearts of the local population…

But that was without counting on a recent encounter with an orca! Passengers aboard the Dingle Sea Safari were treated to a unique sight this week, as an orca was spotted playing just a short distance from the boat on Monday!

Passengers were delighted to post photos and videos of the event on social networks, creating a buzz in Dingle and the whole of Ireland!

Passengers can usually expect to see dolphins, seals, puffins and other wild birds… But encounters with this killer whale are particularly rare.

Dingle Sea Safari was quick to post a message on social networks to comment on the event:

An amazing orca sighting today on board our tour! It’s such a rare sighting that it’s only the second time in 8 years that we’ve seen them in Dingle Bay. What a fantastic pleasure for our customers.

County Kerry is renowned for its rich marine waters. The quality of its waters is home to numerous basking sharks, porpoises, whales and dolphins ready to play in the wake of fishing boats.

Let’s hope such an experience is repeated in Dingle’s waters in the future!
