A whale washed up yesterday on Tyrella beach in County Down, Northern Ireland. An 8-metre-long creature, whose cause of death remains unknown to this day.
The animal was reportedly spotted offshore at around 11 o’clock on Monday morning by the Newcastle Coastguard. The animal was already adrift.
After searching along the coast, we located the whale and waited for the NEA (Northern Ireland Environment Agency) to arrive to take samples and measurements, etc.,” said a Northern Ireland coastguard.
The authorities then set up a security perimeter to surround the animal. An extensive communication campaign was then deployed throughout the day to encourage the public to stay off the beach until the whale was evacuated.
I’d really advise members of the public to stay away. the spokesman told Belfast Live. Officials are currently working to remove the whale from Tyrella beach, but it’s not yet known how the whale died or if it has any diseases. It could be harmful to other animals, we’re not sure at this stage, but we’re just asking people to stay away from the beach.
For the time being, the cause of death remains unknown. Nevertheless, traces of a fishing net were found on the whale. Although it is not yet known whether this may have had a bearing on the whale’s death, it remains a plausible explanation.
As a reminder, this is not the first time this year that Ireland has recorded beached whales. This dramatic phenomenon causes a stir throughout the country with each episode.
