It’s a rather unexpected and chilling discovery. Workmen currently demolishing a former Irish pub in Cork have revealed that they have found the remains of human bones under the foundations. The discovery took place last Thursday on the site of Nancy Spain’s Irish pub on Barrack Street. Enough to fuel many a theory!
The human skeleton was found under the floor in the main room of the pub. Workers were clearing out part of the pub when they made this macabre discovery.
The Gardaí were immediately alerted and the site cordoned off. A spokesman for the authorities was quick to comment: in his view, this was an archaeological find, with the bones dating back at least to the 1950s.
The Cork City Coroner was assisted by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster. All parties are convinced that the bones are over 70 years old. The remains will therefore be treated as an archaeological find.
Nevertheless, the unexpected presence of these bones raises many questions and speculations. Why were these bones hidden in the floor? Was it to conceal a murder?
For Newstalk, the bones could be even older, dating back to the Irish War of Independence. The building housing the pub is said to be over 100 years old: enough to support even the most far-fetched hypotheses! (especially since, this Halloween, the theories are more imaginative than usual!)
In any case, the researchers will now investigate further the bones found. Many questions remain unanswered, and science may yet unravel the mystery…
