It’s a new record that will appear in the Guinness Book in the coming weeks. Rory McGee, a barman from Cork, has just achieved the feat of making 49 Irish coffees in 3 minutes.

This weekend, 5 bartenders gathered at the “Old Storehouse” Irish pub in Dublin’s Temple Bar to try and make the most Irish coffees. Among them were :

  • Rory McGee,
  • Jane Meehan,
  • Séamus Óg Birt,
  • Sean Whelan,
  • and Max McPherson

The event took place on Saturday, January 25, the official national day of Irish coffee, a beverage so dear to Irish hearts!

I’m so proud to have won a Guinness World Record. Everyone loves k’irish coffee and what better way to celebrate it than by making history,” said McGee, according to The Irish Times.

As a reminder, Irish coffee is a purely Irish drink, concocted from black coffee, whiskey, sugar and cream. It is said to have been created “accidentally” in the late 1930s by Joseph Sheridan, in the Irish town of Foynes.

At the time, Foynes was used as a landing place for transatlantic seaplane flights between 1939 and 1945. Some passengers, sometimes anxious about the flight, were offered a surprising cocktail for the time: coffee mixed with whiskey and sugar.

Since then, Irish coffee has become one of Ireland’s national drinks! It is served in most of the country’s Irish pubs, and its preparation has become a veritable savoir-faire, as well as an art of living, where many bartenders try their hand at creating the most daring Irish coffee imaginable! That’s why this world record, even if it makes you smile, is so important to the Irish.

To be enjoyed in moderation, of course, but a must-try on a trip to Ireland. One thing’s for sure: an Irish coffee made in Ireland has absolutely nothing to do with the taste of an Irish coffee made elsewhere in the world!
