Guinness Arthur’s Day was yesterday in Dublin. This party, organized by the Diageo group in honor of Arthur Guinness, the founder of the famous stout, is currently at the center of a controversy that could well damage it.
It has to be said that the festival has been out of fashion for some years now. The event is an annual gathering in September to celebrate the life of Arthur Guinness, founder of the famous brewery of the same name. On this occasion, the people of Dublin take to the streets, and toast the Pub… But this party is far from being unanimously approved.
The Irish government is said to be questioning Guinness Arthur’s Day, considering the event to be “organized public drinking”. In the words of an Irish government minister, this “second national holiday” would upset the virtue leagues to no end. The latter are said to have witnessed numerous public outbursts, directly linked to the excessive drinking of the crowd. In the wake of this festival on the streets of Dublin, there were reports of excessive hospital admissions, night-time disturbances and violence.
In the government’s view, this party is a clear indication of the societal problem and the deep-seated addiction that some Irish people have to alcohol. So, according to these leagues, Guinness Arthur’s Day is above all an opportunity for the Irish to drink themselves into a stupor, only to end up in the emergency room. An unhealthy relationship with alcohol, which raises the question of whether or not Arthur’s Guinness Day should be renewed next year…
The answer will be in September… Will Arthur Guinness be celebrated once again, and without a hitch or a spill?
