The nominations for the 2022 Oscars have just been announced. And Kenneth Brannagh’s Belfast did brilliantly, being nominated in 7 different categories! As a reminder, this auto-biographical film, dedicated to Kenneth Branagh’s childhood in the Northern Irish town during the Troubles, had already been shortlisted for numerous nominations since its first theatrical screenings.
While Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog literally flew off the screen with 12 nominations to its name, the film Belfast didn’t disappoint and is one of the most successful of the moment.
As a result, it is tipped to win several Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Direction and Best Picture.
Kenneth Branagh himself was nominated for Best Director, as were Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds for Best Supporting Actor. Even Irish artist Van Morrison is tipped to win an Oscar for his original song “Down To Joy”, which accompanies the film!
The only disappointment was that Caitríona Balfe, who plays Ma in the film, and Jamie Dornan were literally snubbed and not nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category. It’s a disappointment that no one was expecting, given that the duo are such screen-catchers in the film!
Aside from this little hiccup, the film Belfast has everything it takes to win the Golden Statuettes! See you on Sunday, March 27, the day of the ceremony, to find out if the film has managed to stand out from its competitors!
