After owning The Clarence hotel for over 30 years, the famous members of Irish band U2, Bono and The Edge, have sold their iconic establishment. The acquisition was made by the Dean hotel group, a subsidiary of the Press Up company. The deal is worth millions of euros, although exact financial details have not been disclosed…
Everyone in Dublin knows it. The Clarence Hotel stands in the heart of the city, on the Temple Bar side of the street, and is a showpiece of luxury. Overlooking the River Liffey, the place has never lacked cachet… and has always been known to belong to Bono and his guitarist The Edge (who bought it in 1992).
One of the hotel’s highlights was a live performance by U2, who played their hits “Beautiful Day” and “Elevation” on the roof of the hotel for BBC Top of the Pops.
The Clarence Hotel
Much more than just a hotel, The Clarence Hotel is today a symbol of the Irish capital. An iconic venue, guests have always flocked here, eager to try out its spacious, luxurious rooms, while boasting that “they’ve slept at Bono’s”.
It’s also a popular destination for wealthy guests seeking a taste of Dublin’s premium hospitality.
All the reviews were unanimous: apart from being owned by rock giants, it was the perfect place for a comfortable stay, with top-of-the-range services.
But a new page seems to be turning for this prestigious address: Bono and The Edge have just sold the hotel to the Press Up hotel group, for a value of several million euros.
And the new owners intend to breathe new life into Clarence! Renovation and extension work is already underway. The renovation project includes an extension in an adjacent building that has also been acquired.
There are also plans to add 42 new rooms to the hotel, which should considerably increase its capacity.
It’s the perfect way to begin a new chapter in the hotel’s fascinating history… and to say goodbye to the U2 era!
